Michigan: Pastor Found Guilty of Long-Term Child Abuse

In one of Michigan’s most disturbing recent cases, former pastor Scott Haught was convicted in 2025 on multiple felony counts, including first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct. The case centered around years of abuse he inflicted on his own daughters—acts that began when they were children and continued into their adolescence.

The Case Unfolds

For decades, Haught was a trusted figure in his community. He led a congregation, counseled families, and held himself out as a man of faith. Behind closed doors, however, he exploited his position of authority and trust to manipulate, control, and repeatedly abuse his children.

The daughters eventually came forward as adults, bravely detailing years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. Their testimony was supported by forensic evidence and corroborated accounts, leading to Haught’s conviction on nine felony charges.

In sentencing, the judge imposed 11 to 25 years in prison, lifetime sex offender registration, and permanent GPS monitoring, ensuring he can never again occupy a position of trust in the community without oversight.

Community Reaction

The case sent shockwaves through the congregation and surrounding towns. Many members of the church expressed disbelief, struggling to reconcile the man they knew from the pulpit with the crimes revealed in court. Others expressed deep anger at the betrayal of trust, particularly toward someone who had preached morality while secretly violating the most basic boundaries of decency and law.

Advocates point out that this case illustrates how abuse in faith communities can be particularly insidious. Victims may fear disbelief, shaming, or retaliation if they report misconduct by clergy. Institutions may also resist transparency to “protect the church’s reputation,” further isolating survivors.

Why This Case Matters

This conviction underscores several critical lessons:

  • Abuse can happen in any community. Titles, positions of authority, or religious affiliations do not make someone immune from committing crimes.
  • Survivors’ voices are powerful. Despite years of silence, the courage of the victims in coming forward led to justice.
  • Legal accountability is key. The sentence not only punishes the perpetrator but also sends a message that abuse will not be tolerated, no matter who commits it.
  • Ongoing support is essential. Survivors of childhood abuse often face lifelong trauma, requiring counseling, legal advocacy, and community validation.

Moving Forward

Cases like this serve as a call to action for both the legal system and communities of faith. Leaders must adopt zero-tolerance policies, create safe reporting channels, and prioritize the protection of children and vulnerable individuals over preserving reputation.
